Note: As stated under the Source (above), I received this book for free from St. Martin’s via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review (and trust me, honest is always what you’ll get).

Summary: A murder at the circus in town leads to the unraveling of several previous tragedies, including the accidental death of the mayor’s son three years ago, and three murders from thirty years ago that have never been solved.

Review: Excellent book. One of the best, most complex mysteries I’ve read in a long, long time. Great strong female protagonist, tightly weaved plot, outstanding twists and turns, and I was absolutely rapt until the end. I’m thrilled to know that this is a first in series because I’m eager to read more about Detective Gemma Monroe (including diving deeper into her relationship with Brody).

My singular complaint about the book is it wrapped up way too quickly. I was so on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book and then the ending fell flat for me. The intensity didn’t hold. The scene where the killer is outed, I expected to feel a little more apprehensive, for things to be a bit more dramatic, but it just fizzled. That is the only reason this book didn’t get top grade from me.

Regardless, I would absolutely recommend it. Smart, entertaining, a great ride!
