Review: Two things to note about this book. First, it was hyped. Not like huge public hype, but like a lot of people in my reading circle either read this book and loved it OR had read and loved her previous book kind of hype. Second, the cover is gorgeous (you have to see it in person to truly appreciate how beautiful it is), and I’m an absolute sucker for a pretty cover. So, I went in with high expectations.
Alas, I was disappointed. Sigh.
The first half was a bit of a slog for me. Admittedly, I was coming out of (or attempting to force myself out of) a reading rut. But the rut is the exact reason I picked up something that I had heard good things about and that I could reasonably expect to be fast-paced and intense (it was neither). The only thing that saved this book from getting a much worse review is that it picked up in the second half. It didn’t pick up enough, but it changed my rating from “why bother” to “I guess it couldn’t hurt”.
For a book that I repeatedly heard referred to as “unputdownable”, I would have expected some suspense, and for me, it fell short. The groundwork was there, I could see what the author was trying to do, but I just wasn’t feeling it.
I wouldn’t warn you off it, but it was just meh for me.
