Note: As stated under the Source (above), I received this book for free from Penguin Random House in exchange for my honest review (and trust me, honest is always what you’ll get).
Summary: When Pepper restores a rare and expensive car, she has no idea how profoundly it will change her life. Through the sale of the car, she is connected to the mysterious woman who purchases it from her, a woman with an unbelievable history, who in the past had found herself in a predicament similar to Pepper’s and now wants to help.
Review: This is definitely one of those cases where my desire to not spoil anything makes it difficult for me to adequately summarize. In essence, this book is about love, survival, and second chances. It takes places in a time just before the beginning of World War II as well as in the mid-60’s, jumping back and forth between those two time periods. In terms of historical fiction, it is one of the best I’ve read this year.
Beatriz Williams is not an author I’ve read before, but I just put all of her other books on hold at the library. All of them. Yesterday, I picked up this book after my kids went down thinking I’d read 30 pages and then go watch television for a little while. Instead, I found myself more than 300 pages in at bedtime and so, so sad that my eyes would no longer stay peeled open. Then I snuck as much time as I could throughout the day, and now here I am: done. And absolutely crestfallen that it’s all over.
If you are into historical fiction, if you love stories about the greatest kinds of love, than this book is for you. The writing is superb, the characters are vivid, the love is visceral…it was exactly what I needed right at this moment. It was just lovely and I had such a hard time letting go of the story at the end. Absolutely enchanting.
