Review: First, I want to say that I loved this series collectively, so much so that I pre-ordered this last installment…and then let it sit for the better part of a year. Not because I wasn’t excited, but because I was not at all ready to let go of this world. That said, I’m glad Ms. Clare didn’t drag things out and continue to write more books in the series simply because she could sell them. This was the right time and the right place to end the series. As a reader, I always feel like I should be left wanting just a little more, but that things are tidied up enough to feel ok about letting go.

If you’ve read the series, you know all there is to know about the characters and the world they inhabit. And really, there weren’t any real surprises is this last book, save one. However, even that one thing was “remedied” at the very end, so…it was pretty happily ever after. Truthfully, I had a little bit of a problem with that. I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to ruin the end, but I’ll say that, even in fantasy, realism matters.

The ending of this book felt a little soft, and it was clear from the beginning that seeds of another series were being planted, which might be exciting for some, but also felt a bit annoying at times. I’m not sure how I wanted things to end, and I’m not wholly disappointed, but I was slightly deflated about the last 100 pages or so.
